This stops the chinchilla from going anywhere it wants, and protects the walls and trim of your home . This may not sound as serious an issue as chewing wires, but it can be. Chinchillas will chew carpet, too, if they’re let loose in a carpeted room. This isn’t a certainty like chewing wires, but it’s common enough to be a problem.
This allows the new guardian to prepare for the chinchilla's arrival. Appropriate housing, bedding, food and supplies are expected to be set up in an appropriate cage and ready for the chinchilla to move into upon final adoption. We will not adopt a chinchilla to any home if an appropriate, safe and clean cage is not available and setup at the time of adoption even after an application has been approved. I have to be honest, any home they go to could result in them actually being unwanted or later being sold on for profit. At my college (recently rated as 'outstanding' by Ofsted might i add) they would have a lifelong home where they educate the next generation about appropriate animal care. Some people have like the positive aspects of our animal care unit so much that they have offered animals for free that they were selling.

I used to volunteer for them and they take very good care of their animals. There are many other colleges all over the UK that keep pets for educational purposes, Bicton College in Devon is a particularly good example. Caring humans looking after them and not leaving them to one side, never letting them stretch their legs like many a chin owner is guilty of doing in their own homes. I have 5 chinchillas of my own so perhaps I should consider having them there. If you have contact info for a shelter in one of these places that does not have pets posted with us, please e-mail us and we'll contact them.

Both rescues operate on a large scale and their sponsorship programs accept PayPal so that anyone worldwide can reach out and bless the life of a precious, deserving chinchilla. Rehoming chinchilla - $225 (Dillsburg)
The adult guardian is the person who must fill out the application with notations about who will be the primary caretaker. The two essential components to ANY rehoming, whether through a rescue service or by direct placement, is an adoption contract and a significant adoption fee. These determine whether the adoption applicant has sufficient knowledge and financial competence . Free to good home puts a chin’s life in danger.
Not well-bred the people would say, can’t keep him when he looks that way. Legs too long, head too small, didn’t notice the heart at all. Look at me deeply, I wanted to say, I’ll give you love, please let me stay.

In chinchillas, this is called gastrointestinal stasis and it can kill. Once it’s outside, it’s difficult to recapture a chinchilla. That’s because they hide in burrows and rock crevices. You won’t see where it’s hiding, and you will struggle to convince it to come out even if you do. That’s why trappers would flush wild chinchillas from their burrows by using smoke. If your chinchilla is unhappy with its living situation, then it will take its chances in the wild.

This means that if you let your chinchilla roam freely, it could try to get out. If you’re careful, this won’t be a problem, but it’s something you must be aware of. He loves all the fun and necessary things in his “cage” but prefers napping under an upholstered arm chair or on the head of a big ceramic dog in front of the window AC vent. If you have the extra room that’s CAREFULLY secured, your chinchilla can successfully roam free. The bathroom doesn’t typically have carpet or exposed wires in it, or any wooden furniture. But if you choose the bathroom, you must ensure there is no water your chinchilla can come into contact with.
We came into the rescue on 24th June 2006 as our previous owners were emigrating to the USA. Part of this is the baseline level of confusion about different types of animal groups and what they do. The absence of established standards for companion animal care also contributes.

If you answered those questions with a yes, then it is time to start moving on and covering more of the basics about bringing a chinchilla home.
